Hononegah takes down Belvidere North and Belvidere

Hononegah’s varsity football team triumphs again after crushing victories over Belvidere North and Belvidere: 34-7 and 49-6, respectively. Despite fans’ expectations for a tough fight against North, the game was an easy win. Our record is now 8-0, and the Indians only have one more conference game before playoffs to cement their title as the undefeated NIC-10 champions.

For the entirety of the first three quarters of the game on October 6, Hononegah dominated the scoreboard—reaching a 28-0 tally before Belvidere North was able to complete their first (and only) touchdown of the game. #48, Brayden Lane, made a rushing touchdown in the game’s initial 15 minutes. Immediately following a turnover from the Blue Thunder, senior Cole Warren (#2) sent a 35 yard pass to Joe Melcher (#17) for another 6 points, bringing the score to 14-0 after the point after touchdown. Warren made another passing touchdown later in the game, this time 45 yards to senior Isaiah Houi (#7). #35, Greyson Motter, came in clutch—completing two rushing touchdowns to lock in the win.

Our senior night and homecoming game against the Belvidere Bucs was the rainiest game of the year; still, the Indian fans held on strongly in the stands to support them. Although the weather was less than ideal, it was a great last home game for all the players, especially our departing seniors. Standout seniors of the night were quarterback Cole Warren (#2) and slotback/free safety Isaiah Houi (#7). Our homecoming King and Queen were both present at the game: Drake Broege on the field, and Amelia Tallman as Princess Hononegah.

Hononegah currently places 60th in Illinois, third in the Rockford Area, and first in the NIC-10. Senior Gabe Kohl (#44) now holds the #1 spot in our conference for punt average and is ranked 12th for tackles. Seniors Kurt Smith and Aundre Pilgrim also take fourth and 11th on the NIC-10 defensive tackles leaderboard, respectively. Warren still holds first place in the NIC-10 for passing yards with 1300 total after his last game. His teammate and partner for these last four years, Houi, holds the top spot in receiving yards with 456 yards. Neither of them could be where they are without the other on the field.

Our next and final conference matchup is against Rockford Auburn. They currently have a 5-3 record after their victory over Jefferson last Friday. After this match-up, Hononegah will proceed to the playoffs. The student section theme is jungle, so be sure to dress up in your favorite animal prints and shades of green!
