Freshman soccer team ends season as conference champions
The Hononegah freshman boys soccer team has officially ended its season with an overall record of 10-4-1. Their conference record was 6-1-1, which earned them the title of overall conference champions.
This team had an excellent season, with only 12 goals scored against them. With help from his defense, star goalie Jack Schultz (#22), had seven shut-outs—meaning that out of 15 games, he was only scored on 12 times between eight games, which is an impressive feat. Schultz proved himself as a stellar all-around player during their match against Belvidere, in which he played striker and scored a well-deserved goal.
Defensive players to note were captains Jackson Metzler (#14) and Preston LaMendola (#10), along with Alexander Bieber (#12). The team’s success can also be accredited to their stellar offense including Greysen Merrill (#19), Jacob Neilsen (#7), and Joaquin Rodriguez (#27). Merrill and Neilsen both rounded out the season with five goals each; Rodriguez scored three.
Other players worth highlighting are Caleb Greving (#20), Grayson Bailor (#5), and Grayson Cain (#3). Greving had one goal this season and took the ball up the field to our strikers countless times throughout the season. Cain doubled as midfielder and goalkeeper, scored once, and served as a partner to all of his teammates on the field. Bailor had two goals, and primarily played striker. All in all, this team had a spectacularly victorious season, and grew into a family that will continue together throughout their years in high school and future seasons to come.
